About
What is Anime?
To put it simply, anime is Japanese cartoons. But keep in mind, they’re absolutely nothing like the typical American Saturday-morning cartoons. In fact, most anime fans will become highly offended, so anime is nothing like Scooby Doo, Sponge Bob Square Pants, or even the Simpsons or South Park.
Anime is a whole different category from American cartoons in their depth of characterization, setting, and plot (among other things). For the most part, the quality of animation in anime goes way beyond that of American cartoons. Also, the plot of a typical Anime may span several episodes, and animes in Japan are rarely rerun. In fact, the longest airing animes span hundreds of episodes. Doraemon (1973 – ongoing) has over 2000+ episodes.
Anime spans many genres, from silly romantic comedies (Ouran High School, Nodame Cantabile) to fantasy adventures (Dragon Ball Z and One Piece), high-tech science fiction (Gundam 00, Macross Frontier), and much more. The most distinctive quality of anime is the subject manner: much of anime deals with “real-life” topics that American cartoons wouldn’t touch with a 30-foot pole. For instance, the death of major characters is common in anime, as are complex relationships between characters.
